islands are around Koufonissi

Keros Island

Many small islands are around Koufonissi but the largest ones are Keros island and Kato (Lower) Koufonissi. Keros, which is in its entirety proclaimed as an archaeological site, was once one of the most important centres of Cycladic civilisation.
On Keros island, two of the masterpieces of that era were discovered, the Piper and the Harp Player, which can be seen at the Archaeological Museum in Athens.
One version of history considers Keros and not Delos island as the legendary birthplace (Asteria) of the gods Apollo and Artemis.

Kato (Lower) Koufonissi

Kato Koufonissi is just a breath away from Pano Koufonissi and Keros and has beautiful beaches. It is well worth a visit or day trip with one of the small local caiques which go back and forth on a regular basis.   While there one can also tickle their taste buds at the Venetsanos Tavern.

There are few houses on this island and most are inhabited only during the summer, but you may visit the beautiful small church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) which has been built on ruins of an ancient Temple. Every 15th of August there is a big mass and all the islanders are present for the religious celebration - and the wine and seafood feast which is laid out for all visitors afterwards.
